BONE BELGE
BONE BELGE IS A MATERIAL RESEARCH WITH A CONTEMPORARY VIEW ON HOW WE CAN WORK WITH BOVINE BONE, THAT UNTIL TODAY IS CONSIDERED AS WASTE MATERIAL. THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH IS TO CREATE MATERIALS WITH BONE AND GIVING WASTE MATERIAL A NEW VALUE BY PRESENTING IT IN A NEW CONTEXT.
LIKE LEATHER, BOVINE BONE IS A BYPRODUCT FROM THE MEAT INDUSTRY, BUT ONLY LEATHER IS LARGELY USED IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES FOR ITS AESTHETIC. THE UNIQUE QUALITIES PROVIDE A FEEL OF LUXURY, YET BONE DOESN’T GET THE SAME VALUE. THIS CONTRAST BETWEEN TWO MATERIALS FROM THE SAME ORGANISM AND THE QUESTION ’'WHAT MAKES A MATERIAL VALUABLE?’’, WAS THE START OF A MATERIAL RESEARCH CALLED BONE BELGE.
MATERIAL RESULTS
MATERIAL I
DISCARDED BOVINE BONE IS THINLY SLICED, STRUCTURALLY ASSEMBLED AND CASTED IN BLACK BIO RESIN
THE PURPOSE was TO CREATE AN INNER DIALOGUE WITHIN THE VIEWER BY SHOWING THE MATERIAL IN ITS RAW FORM AND NOT HIDING THE FACT IT CAME FROM A LIVING ORGANISM. THIS INNER TENSION IS ENFORCED BY CASTING THE ORGANIC MATTER IN BLACK BIO RESIN. BY PRESENTING THE RAW BONE IN AN UNNATURAL AND MAN-MADE WAY, IT EMPHASIZES HOW WE RECOGNIZE AND EXPERIENCE NATURAL MATERIALS AND HOW WE ARE ESTRANGED FROM THE ORIGIN OF THESE MATERIALS. THIS CHALLENGES THE AUDIENCE TO THINK FURTHER THAN THE AESTHETIC PART OF A MATERIAL.
MATERIAL II
DISCARDED BOVINE BONE IS GRINDED INTO BONE GRANULATE AND CASTED IN BLACK BIO RESIN
THESE MATERIALS ARE CREATED BY THE ARTIST AND ARE PRESENTED IN DIFFERENT EDITIONS.
